BOB FISCHER shares his recollections of Europe in May of 1945 with the 71st Division of the Third Army of the United States -- especially the liberation of Gunskirchen Lager, a concentration camp for Hungarian Jews in Austria.

It is an opportunity to hear first-hand about history as it was being made.

The lunch is optional and may be reserved by calling the library at 315.589.2048 by 8 PM on Monday, February 13.

Write That Novel!!

Learn how with Brooks Tenney, author, on Wednesday, November 16 at the Friends' "Sandwiched In" program. Mr. Tenney has published four novels himself, and will share some motivation to turn those ideas into real books. If you've ever dreamed about seeing your writing in print, you'd better attend.

The program runs from noon to 1 PM in the library's Community Room. It's free and open to all. If you'd like to enjoy an optional purchased lunch, call the library at (315)589-2048 by 8 PM on Monday, November 14. Feel free to bring your own lunch if you prefer.

Life With Alpacas... The Story of Stoney Elm Alpacas

Join us to hear from Jessie Keymel, co-owner of Stoney Elm Alpacas in Walworth. She'll explain how she and her husband Roger got started in the alpaca business and will share all about these delightful, endearing animals.

The program is from noon to 1 PM on Wednesday, October 19 in the library's Community Room.

KIRK BAKER kicks off the Fall Season

The first Friends' luncheon program of the Fall season will be Wednesday, September 21 at noon with Pastor Kirk Baker from the Williamson Presbyterian Church. Pastor Baker will share his take on "Humor in the Bible" because he feels that sometimes people take biblical readings too seriously! Enjoy a new perspective on one of the most influential books in our culture. Call the library to reserve an optional lunch.

The Friends of the Library will hold an Open House to honor Town Historian Chet Peters on Wednesday, May 18 from noon to 1 PM. Light refreshments will be served.

Come and "Chat with Chet" -- to ask any questions you may have about Williamson's history, and to thank him for his dedicated years of service preserving our heritage!

Author Alex Reid On Wednesday, April 20

Local author, Alex Reid, will talk about his book, Reid's Short Reads: Glimpses of Fun and Fear. The book is a series of short and humorous reflections on his life. It covers his experiences as a child growing up in London during the Blitz and continues on through his marriage and subsequent move to Wayne County. His humor and poignant perspectives on life and loss will resonate with everyone.

The program begins at noon and if you would like to enjoy a lunch provided by the Friends, call the library by 8 PM on Monday, April 18. Lunches are optional, or you are welcome to bring your own.

Teaching Teachers in Haiti

Wednesday, March 16 from noon to 1 PM:

Sandra Hall, Joan Miller, Pam Lergner and Dan Fitzgerald journeyed to Haiti recently to volunteer as guest lecturers for the American University of the Caribbean in LesCaye, Haiti. The four teachers from the Sodus and Williamson school districts went to LesCaye to teach professors and university students teaching methods, English and the TOEFL test (Test of English as a Foreign Language).

The program will include pictures of Haiti and firsthand accounts of the country after its devastating earthquake as well as the story of those who are investing in its future by teaching its children.

Lyman Howe presents "How I Built a Houseboat!"

Wednesday, November 17 from Noon to 1 PM. Hear the very interesting story of how Williamson resident, former Navy man and life-long Eagle Scout, LYMAN HOWE, built his own houseboat. Mr. Howe, step-dad to Perry Plyter and Julie Parker, is an active member of the community who enjoys a number of hobbies -- not the least of which is boat-building.

First Fall Program -- Helpful Honeybees!

On Wednesday, September 15, the Friends of the Library will kick off their fall "Sandwiched In" programs with Mary Moss-Sprague, Master Gardener and beekeeper. Ms Moss-Sprague will explain the importance of the honeybee in successful farming and gardening. She will explain how to entice the "good" bees to your garden, and how to protect them while they are there. The mysterious colony collapse that is devastating honeybee populations will also be discussed. The program runs from noon to 1 PM in the library's Community Room. Follow the Underground Railroad with Carol and Jim May

The Underground Railroad is an important part of America's history. Local residents, Carol and Jim May, followed the route established by citizens who wanted to free America's slaves by giving them safe passage to Canada. The Mays -- on bicycles -- road the same route that hundreds of slaves secretly traveled, despite terrible danger and hardship. Along the way, the Mays visited the underground's landmarks and met fascinating people. They have now written a book about their adventures and what they learned about this trans-formative time in our history. Hear about their travels and see the photographs that they took along the way. The program is on Wednesday, April 21 at noon in the library's Community Room. It is free and open to the public. Welcome Spring with Ed Snyder's Photos

Vintage Valentine Cards with Lila Shoales

This retired graphic artist has found photographing nature to be his real love, ever since he received his first Kodak Instamatic camera in the 60's! Although the monthly lunch programs are not held during June, July or August, the Friends of the Library still have a lot to do with the exciting things happening at the library this summer.

The "Be Creative @ Your Library" summer program features many programs and activities that have been underwritten by the Friends and wound not be possible without them. Hundreds of local families benefit from the generosity of the Friends of the Library.

In addition, the Friends of the Library co-sponsor the wonderful "Firefly Concert" series at the Patio Stage on Wednesdays in July. Last year, over 1000 people enjoyed the great music on those nice summer nights, thanks in part to the Friends.

It is through the work of the Friends that the library can offer these special events. Their dedicated work enriches the library's program so much, and we are very grateful to them!
